Akamas Peninsula
The Akamas is a 230km square area in the northwest of Cyprus protected as a nature reserve.
Up until the year 2000, the Akamas was used by the British Army and Navy for military exercises and as a firing range. Under the 1960 Treaty of Establishment, the British Army was allowed to use the Akamas for exercises for up to 70 days a year.
At the southern end of the Akamas Peninsula is the village of Agios Georgios and on its northeast side the town of Polis. Due to the mountainous nature of the Akamas there are no roads running through its heartland. Most of roads marked on Cypriot road maps of the area are not surfaced – it is possible to explore the Akamas in a normal car, but a 4×4 is much better.
Visitor attractions in Akamas include a loggerhead turtle sanctuary at Lara and the Baths of Aphrodite where the goddess is said to have bathed, near Polis. There are some terrific, secluded beaches along the Akamas coastline. Chec out Lara Beach – you won’t be disappointed.
