Polis
Heading towards the coastline on the opposite side from Paphos with a beautiful 25 minute drive in between, and you will find the town of Polis. Taking in Polis, Latchi, Lysos, Peristerona, Goudi, Pelathousa, Argaka, Nea Dimmata, Ayia Marina and Pomos you are sure to find something appealing in this very unspoilt area of Paphos & Cyprus.
There is plenty of activity to choose from in Polis, whether you wish to dine in one of the many good quality restaurants, have a coffee or lunch in the central square, hire mountain bikes, quad bikes or maybe even a boat at Latchi!
Latchi
Latchi beach is renowned as one of the best in Cyprus and not as crowded as the beaches in and around Paphos itself. Latchi beach is famous for its clear blue sea, soft white sand and a great selection of water-sports which are readily available. Take one of the boat rides (or even hire your own) to the ‘blue lagoon’, have a swim and/or snorkel, then come back to the pretty harbour/fishing port and have the famous ‘Fish Meze’ where you will be served approx 20 dishes including some of the freshest catches of the day whilst watching the world go by.
The water-sports available at Latchi include diving, snorkelling, sailing, banana rides and a great deal more. Bring your UK driving licence and you can even hire a boat and explore the Akamas coastline from the sea (special discount for our customers). Drop the anchor when you feel like it and swim or snorkel in the warm crystal blue water of the Mediterranean Sea.
Peristerona
Peristerona is a traditional mountain village in Paphos District, Cyprus. It’s a picturesque village famous for its efforts to maintain the beauty and the traditions of Cyprus. Peristerona is primarily an agricultural village producing cereals, olives and almonds with its wonderful climate producing many delightful fruits and vegetables such as cherries, avocado, mango, watermelons, apples, lemons and oranges in abundance.
The name Peristerona derives from the Greek word for dove or pigeon (peristeri). The church, St. Barnabas and Hilarion Church, has five domes on the roof arranged in the shape of a cross, a feature only seen on one other church in the island. Peristerona is always a very green village due to the lush vegetation. It all looks particularly special in winter and spring months and is ideal for photographers, artists and those who like to walk and even hike.In various locations around Peristerona there are many remarkable landmark churches. Ayios Georgios was built in the 13th century where frescoes of Saint Mama can be found and it’s still protected by the antiquities department.
Churches such as Panayia Chryselousa constructed at the end of the 15th century with Byzantine and Gothic elements, Profitis Elias, Ayios Constantinos, Ayios Charalambos and the country church of Archangel Michael provide for a unique perspective of the village’s history. The famous museum of Arsinoe displays an attractive collection of objects from the Byzantine period, including Byzantine icons from the 13th to 19th centuries, as well as wood carved ecclesiastical items, local and imported silver and metal artefacts as well as textiles.
Rare books and manuscripts are also on display.Peristerona is situated between the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea and the spectacular mountains of Paphos Forest and the Troodos. Walking in the forests is a delight. Filled with pine trees, fruit and olive trees, wild flowers and herbs and vineyards the air is scented and the views spectacular.
Lysos
Lysos is a traditional mountain village in Paphos District, Cyprus. It’s a picturesque mountain village famous for its efforts to maintain the beauty and the traditions of Cyprus. At just under 500 metres above sea level the summers are a few degrees cooler than the fierce summer temperatures in the coastal towns, the air is less humid and there’s usually a gentle mountain breeze. In various locations around Lysos there are many remarkable landmark churches. Ayios Georgios was built in the 13th century where frescoes of Saint Mama can be found and it’s still protected by the antiquities department. Churches such as Panayia Chryselousa constructed at the end of the 15th century with Byzantine and Gothic elements, Profitis Elias, Ayios Constantinos, Ayios Charalambos and the country church of Archangel Michael provide for a unique perspective of the village history. With an abundance of natural water Lysos was used in Cyprus as an industrial area for the melting of metals. The fountain located by the church and built in the 1900’s was made entirely of stone including the five taps of which were used to supply fresh drinking water.
Some of the best horse riding in Cyprus is also on the doorstep in Lysos.
Lysos is situated between the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea and the spectacular mountains of Paphos Forest and the Troodos. Walking in the forests is a delight. Filled with pine trees, fruit and olive trees, wild flowers and herbs and vineyards the air is scented and the views spectacular. Lysos is home to a very good traditional Cyprus taverna, with neighbouring shops and the more widely known Paradisos Hills Hotel (50m away from 3 villas we advertise there). The Paradisos Hills Hotel is a small intimate hotel with only 15 rooms and a restaurant open for breakfast, lunch and dinner serving only the finest traditional Cyprus and International cuisine.
Most of the food is locally sourced and much of it is organic and the Sunday buffet lunches are now known throughout Cyprus. The Paradisos Hills Hotel also has international evenings where guests and regular customers can experience something different and test the full range of its gastronomic skills.
Clay Pigeon Shooting is also now available in Lysos and represents great value for money. One of our owners is more than happy to take people there and get them started.
Argaka
A beautiful and somewhat unspoilt Cypriot Village sandwiched between the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea and some spectacular mountains filled with pine trees. Argaka is home to a number of traditional Cypriot restaurants, a beach bar and an Irish Bar as well as a bakery and 2 mini-markets. Just a 10 minute driove and you are in Central Polis and only a few minutes further to Latchi.
Nea Dimmata/Ayia Marina
The Local Area Nea Dimmata and Ayia Marina Two small coastal villages with local supermarkets and bakeries, tavernas and coffee shops. The area is exceptionally fertile with the local farms growing tomatoes, cucumbers and strawberries. The beach starts at the bottom of the garden and goes pretty much all the way to Polis 37 miles/60km away. The beach is dotted with cafes and restaurants offering a variety of facilities from simple drinks and snacks to full lunches and evening meals. Every taste is catered for, a great opportunity to enjoy the local Cyprus cuisine.
Pomos
Pomos is a small coastal village with local supermarket, small butchers, bank, tavernas and coffee shops. The area is exceptionally fertile with the local farms growing tomatoes, cucumbers and strawberries. The beach and coastline starts just 100m away and goes pretty much all the way to Polis. The beach is dotted with cafes and restaurants offering a variety of facilities from simple drinks and snacks to full lunches and evening meals. Every taste is catered for, a great opportunity to enjoy the local Cyprus cuisine.
Pomos has a small harbour for local fishing boats and a number of noted fish restaurants. Fresh fish? It was caught this morning… We recommend visiting Kannali fish taverna overlooking the small marina. Fresh fish, great food, great service, great value and it’ll take you 10 minutes to walk home along the beach afterwards back to the villa.
Goudi
Goudi is situated on the banks of the Chrysochou River, Goudi is a peaceful Cypriot village near Polis in Paphos District, Cyprus. Providing an ideal location to explore the beauty of the surrounding area, Goudi is a picturesque village famous for its stone built villas and efforts to maintain the beauty and the traditions of Cyprus. Goudi is situated between the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea and the spectacular mountains of Paphos Forest and the Troodos. Walking in the forests is a delight. For the more adventurous, you can explore the Akamas nature reserve and go all the way round to Lara Beach famous for its turtles and another wonderful unspoilt beach. Other fantastic scenery can be taken in at Cedar Valley and the Troodos mountain range where in winter, you can even ski!
